Geo-Thermal Water to Water Heating & Cooling
To transfer heat from one body to another using geo-thermal principles, a water source is necessary - this is usually a well; often water from a lake, canal or river will suffice.

The “source water” is pumped through the inner tube of a tube-in-tube cupro-nickel heat exchanger in a counter flow with the refrigerant being circulated by the compressor through the outer where heat is transferred from the water to the refrigerant by condition.

The refrigerant enters the evaporator source water heat exchangers where it evaporates to a vapor. Evaporation requires a large amount of heat (the heat of evaporation) and that heat, removed from the source water is absorbed by the refrigerant.

The compressor then removes the warm refrigerant vapor from the evaporator and compresses it to high pressure. This (heat of compression) further increases the temperature. The hot vapor then enters a second heat exchanger where it is “condensed” back to a liquid. For condensation to occur, a large amount of heat (the heat rejection) is given up to the pool or spa water as it flows through the condenser heat exchanger.

Cupro-nickel (copper nickel) is an alloy of copper, nickel and strengthening elements such as iron and manganese. Cupro-nickel exhibits superior corrosion resistance in seawater, piping systems, and heat exchangers. The Cupro-nickel alloy technology has been known by the chinese since the 3rd century B.C. under the name “white copper” and was used in corrosive environments and is still used extensively in the modern era today. Cupro-nickel with its alloy properties such as low general corrosion due to chlorides, good pitting resistance, readily weld-able, easy to fabricate and its inherent resistance to biofouling is uniquely qualified as an ideal candidate and one of the preferred materials used for heat exchangers in the geo-thermal industry. Cupro-nickel salt water piping systems in some pool and spa heat exchangers can last a lifetime.
